gaming

Just doodling today. Last night I was up late playing some TF2 and CSS. After a days work gaming is a great way to unwind. Some rounds (as usual) got pretty tense and the trash talk was extra vicious. Ahhh good times.

Falcotron

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Awhile back we we’re getting blasted with requests for custom flash games. Everything from side scrollers to simple match games. With all these games we could have actually created a mini arcade. I came up with a proposed concept to the team, actually Kelsey came up with the look, I just added the robot as an escort to the site. You can see it here.

But having alot of games to work on, we just never got the time to build the arcade site. It’s a catch 22. The silver lining though it was great practice to create and develop a 3D character and it gave great insight into what it takes to develop one. The character was created in a 3D program from scratch, it was created without any visual concepts or blueprint. Something I have never done since. Drawing out a character prior to development is a critical step that should not be over looked. In a weird way by drawing out you character first you get to know him and discover a personality. Sounds dumb but its true. In this case I really just wanted to teach my self how to rig a character. Now looking back I lacked a proper understanding about modeling for the purpose of rigging. Essentially this character was just a bunch of polys slapped together without looking at the final goal. Much was learned off this guy. Like all characters I gave him a name. Falcotron. Why? Well the word falcon is great but when merged with tron just makes it kick ass. Lolz.

Dante Dudes are done… sorta

Well the characters are modeled and some what ready. One thing the models are missing are a rig. Fortunately we did not need any animation so I just posed them using a FK system over a complete skeleton using IK. Good thing too, time was running out. Originally the characters were going to be 2D. I convinced the team that 3D might be a better investment seeing how once the 3D work was done you can use them again in a series of other Dante games or even some promotional short videos. Rigging though is a complete pain, but that is another post.

character_concepts2

Here I was tinkering on how I’d like the character to look. I started with the devil character because the angel outside of the wings is pretty plain. The devil you can play with a more sinister look. However in the end it was decided cute works best for the game.

Dante’s Conundrum

character_conceptsThis is a concept for an up coming game for the iPhone we are developing. The game pits devils vs angels on the ultimate battle ground. Well okay mabey not that extreme, unless you consider a grid of circles a battle ground. We wanted to have cute plump little representations for good and bad. I liked the idea of having little guys in rubber suits. This is just a quick idea. I added the background to help the team visualize the over all feel of the game which should be light hearted. More to come.

Painting with my iPhone

Monday, March 16th, 2009

A friend introduced me to a great little drawing app for the iPhone called brushes. I’ve tried other sketching apps but this one by far is the best.

This came out of a scribble. It reminds me of the “Thing” movie poster.

Some old dude.

Left 4 Dead Demo, Left Me Wanting More.

left_4_dead_pc_rp01boxart_160wI am totally loving Left 4 Dead. I have never played a co-op game before and I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. Valve as usual has created a game that plays really well. The graphics might not be Crysis caliber but that’s okay, it means more people can play it, not to mention a really good rig plays it like a hot knife through butter. That’s not to say the graphics are bad, in fact far from it. The graphics are fantastic, it’s just that they are not the central focus of the game like Crysis. Personally I have gotten over the graphics ogling in video games anyway. I’d rather have a good gaming experience rather then yelling “Wow that glass looks like real glass!”. There are some bugs in the A.I. and there needs to be some tweaks here and there. It is a demo right now after all. But man I can not wait to see the rest of this game, the demo is a pure tease. It’s nice but you want it to keep going. The 18th is only 3 days away. w00t!

I’ve been getting positive feedback over the last post, Zombification. It’s fun to just goof around in photoshop once and awhile. Here is yet another goofing. Left 4 Dead aims to put you in the middle of zombie action movie. As the game loads they display a movie like poster that relates to the campaign your about to play. The first campaign (No Mercy) is about getting to the hospital in hopes of being rescued via helicopter from the zombie apocolypse. The other night I was playing with a few guys online and we were relating the characters in the game to the current election that just past. It was funny -  you just had to be there. So I thought that it would be funny if that what the loading screen looked like, so I made it. LOLz. I use the Commish (AKA Vic Mackey from the sheild) as Joe the plumber because I couldn’t find a good shot of Joe that I could use.

Zombification

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Well Obama won the election. I was sitting that night in front of my computer with PhotoShop open and the kid was fed and put to bed. Oh what to do? I could play Team Fortress or CounterStrike, but the game I really want to play (Left 4 Dead - a game about zombies) does not come out until the 18th. However I was feeling a bit creative and not really in the gaming mood. So why don’t I merge all these things together.

Here is a sample of the game I was talking about. It’s basically the best concept ever.. Shotguns and zombies. Plus it’s made by a company that makes only the best games,

Valve. Sure there are alot of great games that came out recently like Fall Out 3 and Far Cry 2, but they’re missing one crucial component. ZOMBIES! (Actualy Fall Out 3 might have em)

So with L4D on the brain and Obama everywhere I thought - Hey what if I Zombify Obama? Hell why stop there? What if the world was infected?

Spidey

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Well tomorrow I’m planning to head down to FanExpo 2008. I haven’t been in years, last time I was there it was only comics and Sci-Fi. Now it touches up on all things geek, video games, horror and the usual. Looking forward to it, Buzz Aldrin is going to be there and Alex Ross (my favourite comic illustrator). I’ll try to post some stuff from there. Anyway I’ve been playing a bit more with the Wacom 12wx tablet, inlight of tomorrows outing I sketched a classic in the world of comics. I’ haven’t drawn Spiderman since I was kid.

Testing out my new Wacom.

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Well I just dove in without thinking and got one of those wacom tablets, you know the one with the screen that you can work directly on. It’s called the 12wx. So far it’s been great. The only issue I had to do a little research on was the video card. I already have a dual screen set up. The Tablet behaves like a another monitor. Initially I was just going to split the second screen using a DVI splitter. After reading some post in forums that was not the best idea. What I had to do was get a 2nd video card. I opted for a cheaper one (8600) than the one I have now (8800 GTX). the great thing abou this whole thing I learn something new, that you can install 2 different cards on your system. I thought they had to be identical, but that is only if your gunning for SLI or Crossfire. I just needed to run a tablet. I have to say that I also have a Wacom Intuos 3 6×8, that is what I was primarily using before now. Drawing and seeing what your drawing on the tablet needless to say feels so intuitive and natural, I think I’ll be posting my old Tablet on Ebay soon. Well here is my first quick sketch with it.

By the way I was just doodling, and this guy came out. He’s not someone I know or anything. I used the drawing to experiment with different coloured light sources at the end. I liked the way the Right side came out.. as for the other side - perhaps green wasn’t the greatest idea - but the effect adds alot. I’ll be applying alot more multiple light sources to my drawings in the future. L8s!
